If you are moving from New York to Miami, or any similarly cold area to a warmer one, you probably have a lot of things to consider. If you’ve never lived in a warm climate before, the prospect could very well seem overwhelming.
Fear not. We will help guide you on the essentials of moving between regions and what you really need to adjust when you move to Miami. And, of course, you need to find movers NYC to help you get the job done right.
If you’re like most people, you’ve probably been building up your wardrobe for decades. Those winter coats probably seem as essential a part of your existence as your favorite necklace does. And you have such precious memories of all your sweaters that you probably cannot imagine potentially parting with them.
But you need to be reasonable when you move South. We all know the climate is changing, but it simply isn’t reasonable to assume that you will need winter clothes when you come to Miami. And unfortunately that also includes your favorite ski sweaters, as well (unless, of course, you want to take winter vacations and go up North for a nice ski trip).
Instead, you should look forward to the prospect of building up your swimwear collection. We know, if you weren’t raised that way it probably seems absurd to own three different bathing suits, but this is a way of life in Miami. And you should get used to accessorizing Miami-style, too. When you chill out in those famous Cuban bars on weekends, you want to do it right. So grab yourself the hottest pair of shades you can find and a fabulous new sun hat and be prepared to hit the strip.
If you’re like most Northeasterners, you are probably used to spending most of your time indoors. Well, you need to get used to changing this mentality when you come to Miami. This means several things: Stock up on sunscreen, because it won’t take long for the sun’s ultraviolet rays to start ripping through your skin and potentially cause permanent damage. If you do it right, you will end up with a nice tan that isn’t too over the top and doesn’t cause serious risks to your health.
You’ll need to consider things like exercise, as well. While exercising along the strip of the beach can be great, it isn’t for everyone. The sun in Miami can be blazing hot, and some people simply don’t like feeling the burn amidst the other burn, if you will. Fortunately, Miami has amazing indoor facilities with air conditioning, as well. So it’s up to you which way you want to go.
Another thing you’ll need to get used to with the change of location is the pace of life. We know that life in New York is all about the rat race, and even if you are an artist in Soho you’re probably used to ripping down the street as you walk, because this is the only way to get by there.
When you move to Miami, this will all suddenly change. People in Florida might not speak with the same slow southern drawl as they do in Mississippi and other Southern states, but the pace of life is definitely slower and more leisurely. So you should prepare yourself for the fact that people might be casually late sometimes, meetings aren’t expected to start and finish on the dot of the hour, etc.
This might take a fair amount of psychological adjustment. While you’re probably used to rushing to get places by a certain time and getting annoyed when you can’t, you can relax knowing that in Miami, people don’t take schedules as seriously. When you move to Miami, your stress level will go down and you will be able to enjoy life to a greater degree.
Moving is always an adjustment. Moving from the North to the South can be a major adjustment. But it can also be a welcome one. Especially if you’ve lived your entire life in the Northeast, the prospect of existing without your scarf and mittens can probably seem unfathomable. This will soon become your reality, though, so you should welcome it and think about the broader possibilities for your new life (remember, we now have digital photography, which is great for preserving memories).
So just relax, go through your wardrobe and think carefully about which items you will really need when you move to the South. And remember, you can always rent boots for that ski vacation you plan to take in Vermont next January.
